International recognition for IUPUI work to improve breast cancer detection

August 18th, 2010

A paper by Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis researchers describing the development of a new methodology to improve identification of breast cancer tissue by pathology laboratories has been selected as the best scientific paper in the "bioinformatics and biomedical applications track" by the International Association for Pattern Recognition.

The best scientific paper award will be presented at the 20th International Conference on Pattern Recognition in Istanbul, Turkey Aug. 23-26.

Co-principal investigators of the study on computer-assisted classification of digitized pathology slides are Murat Dundar, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer science at the School of Science at IUPUI, and Sunil Badve, MBBS, professor of pathology at the IU School of Medicine and a member of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center. All are located on the IUPUI campus.

Additional authors of "A Multiple Instance Learning Approach toward Optimal Classification of Pathology Slides" include Vikas Raykar, Rohit Jain, Olcay Sertel, and Metin Gurcan.

A total of 2,140 papers from around the world competed in six tracks for best paper designation.

The International Association for Pattern Recognition is concerned with pattern recognition, computer vision and image processing. The organization encourages research that increases understanding of the role that machine intelligence can play in accelerating technical and scientific progress.

Dundar will fly to the conference in Istanbul to present the work and receive the award.
