University of Miami to host prestigious National Geographic Young Explorers Workshop, Sept. 25

August 19th, 2010

WHAT: This exciting, free workshop is designed to provide students with an insight into the process of obtaining grants through the National Geographic Society (NGS). It will feature an overview by John Francis, vice president of research conservation and exploration for NGS; information from Rebecca Martin, director of the NGS expedition council; presentations by previous Young Explorer grant recipients; and a panel discussion including NGS Emerging Explorer and University of Miami Professor and Director of the Abess Center for Ecosystem Science & Policy, Kenny Broad and other NGS-funded scientists. Afternoon breakout sessions will give students an opportunity to discuss their innovative ideas for field projects directly with NGS grantees and staff.

WHO: Individuals ages 18 to 25 from South Florida who are interested in pursuing NGS Young Explorer grants in research exploration and conservation-based projects are invited to register. However, space is limited.

WHY: A primary goal for the National Geographic Society is to inspire people to care about the planet. This program is designed specifically to support younger candidates on initial projects, and give them support as they begin to explore and better understand the world around them.
