Hybrid microgrid project reviews solid-state transformers
Partners from EU-funded project TIGON have published a paper on the functionalities and possible applications of solid-state transformers (SST).
Entitled Solid State Transformers: A Critical Review of Projects with Relevant Prototypes and Demonstrators, the paper provides a practical, application-oriented review of the SST. It was published in the MDPI journal "Electronics" with contributions from TIGON partners CIRCE and CERTH.
As the energy transition continues, SSTs are set to play a key role in helping grids cope with new required uses. They comprise state-of-the-art power electronics with galvanic isolation to interconnect two separate alternating current or direct current power grids. The TIGON project is pioneering SSTs for hybrid microgrids as part of a wider package of measures to integrate renewable sources and to make these grids resilient going forward.
The paper's analysis concludes with the future trends and challenges in the wider roll-out of SST technology in electricity grids and will inform TIGON's roll-out of its own microgrids.
