Pioneering the future of electric vehicle charging through research and innovation
Watch the presentation video and discover how DriVe2X aims to bridge the gaps in the electric vehicles infrastructure, shaping the future of electric mobility.
The shift from combustion engines to electric vehicles has substantial implications for the transportation sector. Over the past decade, the global stock of electric vehicles has surged more than twenty times, and this momentum shows little sign of waning.
However, this exponential growth presents its own set of hurdles. Today, charging systems for EVs predominantly rely on unidirectional control frameworks. Such technical methods, when broadly applied, might strain the electrical power infrastructure.
The consortium studies the deployment of bidirectional EV charging in buildings (vehicle-to-building—V2B), homes (vehicle-to-home—V2H), and directly at the grid level (vehicle-to-grid—V2G).

The video shows the journey of DriVe2X, with its multiple connections enabled by the application of smart charging and V2X technology.
DriVe2X is an EU-funded project which involves 18 partners from 8 countries. It aims to accelerate the shift to mass electromobility deployment through innovative smart charging techniques and technological advancements in b-bidirectional charging solutions.
A set of low-cost bi-directional charger units will be tested and validated under different use cases in five demonstrators: Isle of Wight (UK), Maia (PT), Terni (IT), Amsterdam (NL) and Budapest (HU). At these demonstrators, the project aims to assess benefits of V2X for various stakeholder groups, while considering multiple charging scenarios, including public on-road and charging station facilities, building car parks, and private home charging.
Finally, the project will combine users' driving patterns with urban, grid and environmental data to develop predictive models for optimal energy use. With this flexibility, energy will be traded at a local digital marketplace creating a triangle of business interactions between EV owners, building managers, and power network operators.
