Standards for Engineering Education in K-12, new report

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics instruction is collectively referred to as "STEM education." While content standards exist for three STEM disciplines — science, technology, and mathematics — none exist for engineering. A new report from the National Academy of Engineering looks at the value and feasibility of creating standards for engineering education at the K-12 level. Some evidence suggests that engineering education can stimulate interest and improve learning in mathematics and science and understanding of technology. The report recommends that educators come to a consensus on the core concepts and skills in engineering that are appropriate for K-12 students; develop guidelines for K-12 engineering instructional materials; and examine K-12 engineering education at the state and national level.
