Space science and exploration workshop: Nov. 8-10 in Irvine, Calif.
NASA's exploration of space has been largely motivated by questions such as how the universe and the solar system began, whether there is life beyond Earth, and what the future might hold for humans in space. "Sharing the Adventure with the Public: The Value and Excitement of 'Grand Questions' of Space Science and Exploration," a three-day workshop hosted by the National Research Council's Space Studies Board, will feature researchers, media specialists, and other experts who will focus on how searching for answers to these questions shapes the nation's space program and how to convey this research to the public. Speakers will include:
- Linda Billings, research professor, George Washington University, and principal investigator, NASA Astrobiology Program
- Roger Bonnet, executive director, International Space Science Institute
- Miles O'Brien, media consultant and chair, Education and Public Outreach Committee, NASA Advisory Council
- Kim Stanley Robinson, science fiction author
- Sara Seager, associate professor of planetary science and physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
