EU-funded projects on wind energy MERIDIONAL, AIRE, and FLOW unveil knowledge and data hub "WindLab"

December 3rd, 2024

The three EU-funded wind power projects—MERIDIONAL, AIRE, and FLOW—have come together to launch an ambitious initiative: the "WindLab". This collaborative knowledge and data hub aims to consolidate the latest scientific research and provide open-access data to accelerate innovation in wind energy systems.

On 13 November, the WindLab—Knowledge and Data Hub was presented during a joint webinar. On this occasion, project coordinators and partners from the MERIDIONAL, AIRE, and FLOW projects shared their insights into the hub's development. The event set out WindLab´s vision, its potential impact on the wind energy sector, and the efforts driving its creation.

The three projects aim to advance wind energy research. MERIDIONAL focuses on optimising the performance, operation, and design of onshore, offshore, and airborne wind energy systems. AIRE works to maximise wind energy efficiency through advanced tools, particularly by integrating real weather and atmospheric conditions into the equation. Finally, FLOW contributes to developing advanced prediction methods for production statistics and load performance. Together, these projects are laying the groundwork for a rich, open-access repository of data and knowledge that can be used by researchers, developers, and policymakers across Europe and beyond. The WindLab Knowledge & Data Hub presentation explained the taxonomies used, interfaces, and use cases. The platform was also navigated live to show its features and functioning.

WindLab is a centralised platform for sharing datasets, research outcomes and best practices in wind energy, with a emphasis on improving system efficiency, enhancing predictive capabilities, and supporting the development of innovative wind energy technologies. Although the hub is still under development, the webinar offered a sneak peek into its functionalities, highlighting how the contributions from each of the three projects are coming together to build a robust and impactful resource.

The joint webinar featured presentations from the coordinators of each project, along with the three leaders responsible for WindLab's development. The event emphasised the projects' commitment to fostering collaboration within the wind energy sector and ensuring that the latest research and data are available to drive progress in the field and contribute to the European Union's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. This event builds on the already-established collaboration between the three projects, which will continue through other initiatives and synergies.
