BATON ROUGE—Pennington Biomedical Research Center is excited to announce that April's focus for the Small Shifts campaign is integrating brief office and home workouts into daily routines. The Small Shifts initiative is part of the Center's ongoing commitment to promoting manageable lifestyle changes that lead to long-term health and well-being.

Recognizing the challenges of balancing work and personal life, Pennington Biomedical advocates for small, practical adjustments that can seamlessly fit into busy schedules. Engaging in short periods of physical activity, whether in the office or at home, can lead to significant improvements in both physical and mental health.

"The best way to form a positive and healthy new habit is to make minor adjustments to our routines," said Dr. John Kirwan, Executive Director of Pennington Biomedical. "At Pennington Biomedical, we know that long-term adherence to a new adjustment can be difficult, but any small shift in a positive direction can lead to key results down the road."

The Small Shifts campaign emphasizes that minor adjustments to daily habits can have a significant impact over time. Small Shifts are subtle, simple changes designed to be sustainable, reduce stress, set achievable goals and improve long-term health.

Suggested Activities for April's Small Shifts include:

  • Deskercise: Utilize short breaks to perform simple exercises at your desk. Activities such as shoulder rolls, leg lifts, and seated twists can help alleviate stiffness and promote circulation during prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Stair Climbing: Take advantage of available staircases to add a quick cardiovascular workout to your day. Even a few trips up and down the stairs can boost energy levels and enhance fitness.
  • Lunchtime Walks: Allocate part of your lunch break to a brisk walk around your office building or neighborhood. This not only provides physical benefits but also offers a mental refresh, potentially enhancing afternoon productivity.

By adopting these small shifts toward increased physical activity, individuals may experience enhanced mood, improved health, and greater overall performance.

Throughout April, Pennington Biomedical will provide more tips, resources, and success stories to inspire and support participants on their journey toward a more active lifestyle. To receive weekly emails and access additional resources, visit www.pbrc.edu/smallshifts.
