Voices from the ground: ARAGORN experts share insights in soil restoration

July 25th, 2025

Filmed in Romania, three interviews reveal research, real-world collaboration, and the future of soil remediation across Europe.

The ARAGORN project has released three video interviews featuring Xenia Trier, Project Coordinator (University of Copenhagen), Dr. Ali Khanso and Dr. Erik Haas, lead scientists and project partners.

All interviews were recorded in Coronini, Romania, where partners discussed soil restoration strategies and visited a disused copper mine and the legendary Attila's Island (read the whole news)

About ARAGORN

ARAGORN is an EU funded Horizon Europe project that provides a comprehensive decision making framework for public and private land managers to tackle polluted soils across urban, periurban, and rural Europe. Through mapping, sampling, monitoring, and sitespecific remediation solutions, ARAGORN aligns with the EU Soil Strategy to restore ecosystem health and resilience (see more info at aragorn-horizon.eu).

Meet the Voices of ARAGORN

  1. Xenia Trier, Project Coordinator

In this video- interview Xenia explains her role in the project, and gives insights from the first phase of ARAGORN, which has just turned 1 year and a half. Also, she describes a very fruitful experience in Romania, where partners have recently met with local land managers:: "The land managers gave invaluable feedback about their specific constraints to policymakers eager for visual decision dashboards. Our site visits sparked new ideas on combining naturebased and engineered solutions.".

  1. Dr. Ali Khanso

Ali's team works in the research and development department of MicroHummus, which focuses on contaminated soil restoration and environmental rehabilitation.

In the interview, he explains how the data collected will be used to determine key indicators for developing remediation models.

  1. Dr. Erik Haas

Erik's work focuses on analytical chemistry, and in the interview he explores the potential of non-targeted screening methodologies that can be put into work in different contaminated sites.

Why These Interviews Matter

These conversations offer an accessible approach to ARAGORN research, making soil science accessible to landowners, policymakers, investors, and the general public. Viewers will gain firsthand perspectives on soil contamination challenges, the cost of remediation, the challenge for resilience, and the latest tools for mapping and monitoring contaminated land.

All three interviews are available on the ARAGORN YouTube channel and on the project website: Interviews
