Bio-based plastic meets healthcare

August 27th, 2025

The ANIPH project advances PHA biopolymer as a biodegradable solution for humanitarian use

The principles of circular economy are making their way into healthcare. At the heart of this transformation is polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a biopolymer showing promising potential in the development of biobased products for medical applications.

Leading this research and innovation is ANIPH, an EU-funded project dedicated to improving circular solutions for healthcare in humanitarian contexts. ANIPH aims to engineer bio-based wound dressing and sustainable packaging that can biodegrade in all environments, thus reducing plastic pollution where proper waste management is not feasible.

To share its mission, the project has released a presentation video illustrating how its research will enable a shift from fossil-based plastics to biodegradable, circular alternatives.

The video is now available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O1YDCNSYFo&t=3s.

By creating biobased and biodegradable solutions for humanitarian contexts, ANIPH will avoid environmental harm while providing assistance where it's most needed.
