Bioenergy III Conference: Present and New Perspectives on Biorefineries

The conference will address the state-of-the-art challenges of biorefineries with conversion processes into fuel products and chemicals and their technical, scientific, social and economical barriers. It will evaluate the current progress that has been made in establishing biorefinery concepts, research and development, life cycle analysis and identifying industrial successes and best practices, and discuss the most promising future directions. In addition, it will assess the current situation and strategies to reach commercial production. Environmentally sound biobased fuels (ethanol, butanol, methane, biodiesel, biohydrogen, biopower, etc.) and products (biochar, biooils, chemicals, fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals) can make important contributions to the world socio-economic sustainability and its energy security, rural economic development, and environmental quality. The incorporation of additional renewable resources from agriculture and agroforestry wastes into biorefineries will all contribute greatly to the faster implementation.

The conference will focus on a comprehensive view of the impact of the recent progress and development on the production of bioenergy and chemicals from biomass via biological, thermal and chemical conversions. The topics of interest will consist of the following: bioethanol production and technological development, anaerobic and aerobic processes for biogas generation, biohydrogen, biobutanol, microbial fuel cells, thermal conversion (gasification, pyrolysis), biochar, syngas conversion, biodiesel and biorefinery integration. Related environmental, political, social, or economical issues will also be included.

In addition to the exciting scientific and technological themes, the conference offers a platform to promote and encourage interaction among researchers for cross-fertilization of ideas and collaboration. The program will consist of a combination of invited, contributed oral, and poster presentations.

The technical program and the plenary lectures will be selected to reflect the main themes:

Theme I: Bioethanol and Biobutanol

Theme II: Biodiesel

Theme III: Biomass Thermal Conversion, Biochar, Bio-oils, Biogas, and Syngas Conversion

Theme IV: Biogas, Biohydrogen and Microbial Fuel Cells

Theme V: Chemicals from Biomass and Biorefinery Integration

Theme VI: Related environmental issues, policies, socio-economic considerations, life cycle assessments (LCA) (including energy balance involved in the production of bioenergy)

Attendees will represent both fundamental and applied science of the following areas: bio/chemical engineering, agricultural engineering, bioprocess engineering, food chemistry, biology, bio/chemistry, environmental science, physics, engineering and economics.

Oral and Poster Presentations and Manuscripts Publication

The oral presentations will consist of both plenary lectures (45-60 min) and presentations (15 min). To enhance the discussion among participants, each oral presentation will also include a poster presentation to be held in the evening of the day of the oral presentation. Additional free-forum posters will also be presented. All presentations (plenary lectures, oral presentations, and posters) will be refereed and selected on the basis of extended abstracts (400-500 words). There will also be round table discussions / workshops and other technical activities that will enhance and enrich the technical program.

Each presentation will be accompanied by an 8-page manuscript which will be published online in the ECI Symposium Series (services.bepress.com/eci/). The authors will also be strongly encouraged to submit full manuscripts for full review to the International Journal of Chemical Reactor Engineering (http://www.bepress.com/ijcre/) which will publish a special issue on the subject
