Nuclear Security and Science Diplomacy -- Jan. 19 symposium

On Wednesday, Jan. 19, the National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Institute of Peace will hold a symposium that will bring together experts from the U.S. and Russia to explore the role of the scientific community in supporting international nuclear security. Topics to be addressed include lessons learned from past U.S.-Soviet/Russia interactions, needs for monitoring and verifying treaty compliance in the future, and scientists' role in enhancing communication among nations.

SPEAKERS WILL INCLUDE:

William Perry, Michael and Barbara Berberian Professor, Stanford University, and former U.S. secretary of defense (8:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.)
Rose Gottemoeller, assistant secretary of state, and chief negotiator of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) with the Russian Federation (11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.)

The symposium will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. EST on Jan. 19 in Room 100 of the National Academies' Keck Center, 500 Fifth St., N.W., Washington, D.C.
