Tsunami warning for California coast

(PhysOrg.com) -- There is a tsunami warning in effect for the California coast from Point Concepcion to the Oregon border due to the 8.9 earthquake in Japan. Surge heights of 2 to 3 feet are expected for the Santa Cruz area around 7:30 AM on Friday, March 11. This is not expected to directly impact the main campus or campus facilities, but individuals are advised to avoid low lying coastal areas.

Evacuations are in effect for inundation areas and residents of these areas have been contacted by the County via the reverse 911 system. More information about the impacted areas can be found on Santa Cruz Sentinel website.

From the County of Santa Cruz Office of Emergency Services: "Evacuation reception centers are located at the Davenport Fire Department, the Community Center at Jade St Park in Capitola, the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium at 307 Church St in Santa Cruz, Resurrection Church at Soquel Drive and State Park Drive and the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds off E Lake Ave. You can call 831-458-7150 if you need further information or assistance evacuating."

There are significant regional traffic disruptions which may impact travel to/from campus. There are also large numbers of spectators along Empire Grade near the West Entrance and on campus at the Pogonip Overlook on Coolidge Drive which may impact campus traffic.
