On the cutting-edge in condensed matter physics with Nobelist Philip W. Anderson

Princeton University physicist Philip W. Anderson, renowned for his path-breaking insights into the nature of broken symmetry and the emergent electronic properties of magnetic and disordered systems, will be the special guest speaker at the Gotham-Metro Condensed Matter Meeting at the New York Academy of Sciences on April 15, 2011. Anderson will discuss how groundbreaking discoveries often start out unpopular.

Anderson shared the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physics with John. H. van Vleck and Sir Nevill F. Mott, but his huge influence on condensed matter physics continues today in a broad range of subjects, including electron localization, magnetism, and the theory of high temperature superconductivity.

This daylong symposium will also feature Thomas A. Witten, Professor of Physics at the University of Chicago, and Paul McEuen, the Goldwin Smith Professor of Physics at Cornell University and director of the Kavli Institute at Cornell for Nanoscale Science. Witten will discuss how gentle forcing leads to focused structure in thin materials. McEuen will present new results on the structural and physical properties of graphene, including the first STEM images of graphene grain boundaries and their patchwork-quilt-like structure. He will also discuss experiments on atomic drums made with graphene membranes which can be “played” either electrically or optically.
