The Arctic as a messenger for global processes -- climate change and pollution

Media registration is now open for "The Arctic as a Messenger for Global Processes -- Climate Change and Pollution", which will be held 3-6 May 2011 in Copenhagen.

What:
Scientific conference organized by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP/Arctic Council), Aarhus University and University of Copenhagen.

  • The conference will gather more than 400 of the leading international experts on climate change, pollution, ecosystems and societies in the Arctic.
  • The most comprehensive compilation of scientific knowledge on the impacts of climate change on the frozen parts of the Arctic occurring within the past 6 years.
  • New projections on the Arctic cryosphere, and global consequences.
  • Update on environmental issues in the Arctic: Mercury, Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and radioactivity.
  • The scientific content of two major AMAP assessments will be presented at the conference: "SWIPA" (Snow, Water, Ice and Permafrost in the Arctic).

SWIPA is the most comprehensive compilation of scientific knowledge on the impacts of climate change on the frozen parts of the Arctic occurring since the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA), published in 2005.

"The 2011 AMAP Mercury assessment" covers the origins, distribution and consequences of mercury for ecosystems and humans in the Arctic.

Both assessments will be formally delivered to the 7th Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting in Nuuk, Greenland on 12 May 2011.

3 Danish ministers and 1 Swedish minister will attend the conference.
