mBio selected for indexing in MEDLINE

May 2, 2011-- The American Society for Microbiology is proud to announce that the online-only, open-access microbiology journal mBio® has been selected by the National Library of Medicine to be indexed in MEDLINE®.

MEDLINE® is the largest component of PubMed® (http://pubmed.gov/), the freely accessible online database of biomedical journal citations and abstracts created by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Approximately 5,400 journals published in the United States and more than 80 other countries have been selected and are currently indexed for MEDLINE®.

The National Library of Medicine uses an NIH-chartered committee, the Literature Selection Technical Review Committee (LSTRC), to review all new biomedical and health journal titles and recommend those to be indexed for MEDLINE®. Overall, only 20% - 25% of the titles reviewed are selected for indexing.

"The rapidity that mBio® was accepted for inclusion into MEDLINE is a reflection of the very high quality of its published articles," said Editor in Chief Arturo Casadevall. Casadevall is the Leo and Julia Forchheimer Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York.

Launched in May 2010, mBio® is an e-journal designed to make research accessible even to non-scientists. The focus of the journal is on cutting-edge research spanning the entire spectrum of microbiology and related fields.

A key feature of mBio® that sets it apart from other open access journals is that authors are required to include with their submissions a short, lay summary of the research describing the impact it will have so that the nonmicrobiologist can understand its importance. This summary is then published as part of the final article.

mBio® is now indexed in at least 36 journal indexes, including Chemical Abstracts Services, Current Contents- Life Sciences, Directory of Open Access Journals, Illustrata, MEDLINE, ProQuest/Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, PubMed Central, Science Citation Index Expanded (ISI Web of Science), and Summon.
