Scott & White Healthcare receives $3.5 million grant for cancer treatment and research

Scott & White Healthcare in Temple, Texas has received an anonymous gift of $3.5 million. One and a half million dollars of the generous gift will go to doubling the size of the cancer treatment facility in the new Scott & White Children's Hospital opening later this year. The treatment center will expand from approximately 3,500 square feet to 7,700 square feet and allow for double the number of patients. The additional space will in turn allow an increased number of physicians to provide cancer treatment for children. "A world class facility will enhance the continuum of care and allow for children and their families to visit one location for all cancer treatment and pediatric care," said Nancy Birdwell, Chief Development Officer, Scott & White Healthcare.

The remaining two million dollars will go toward cancer cell research led by M. Karen Newell Rogers, Ph.D., director of the Center for Cell Death and Differentiation at Scott & White and Texas A&M Health Science Center. "This generous gift will further the advancement of critical cancer research, bridging the gap between research and the delivery of new therapies, said Dr. Newell Rogers. This gap often causes therapies to languish in laboratories for up to 14 years." A gift like this reduces drug development time in half. More funds mean more resources for research. This gift also allows Scott & White to construct a tissue cell laboratory.
