24th ECNP Congress: The most promising data from research across brain disorders

On behalf of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) we are pleased to invite you to the press conferences of the largest annual scientific meeting on neuroscience, brain disorders, and mental health in Europe, the 24th ECNP Congress in Paris.

The ECNP Congress attracts more than 7,000 psychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists and neuroscience researchers from across the world to discuss the latest advances in brain research and their implications for clinical practice, and its high-calibre programme provides a good opportunity for reporting developments of major public health importance.

The topics of the press conferences, which have been selected with an eye on their public health appeal, will feature exciting research findings as well as novel pharmacological approaches and their impact on patients´ quality of life.

Renowned experts from research centres in France, the United Kingdom and Germany will present the following topics:

• The emotional brain in youth: how to diagnose and treat mood disorders in children and adolescents

  Professor Cohen from the famous Pitié-Salpétričre hospital in Paris will briefly review the diagnostic issues and controversies surrounding bipolar disorder in youth as well as focus on the typical form of bipolar disorder in adolescents and its therapeutic approach.

• The ECNP Networks Initiative (ENI): Innovative approaches in bipolar disorders

  Professor Guy M. Goodwin, FRCPsych, FMedSci, United Kingdom

  Sunday, 4 September 2011, from 15.00-15.45, Passy, Palais des Congrčs de Paris

  Professor Goodwin will highlight a multicentre European collaboration establishing a data collection of more than 10.000 patients for conducting studies into the main psychiatric conditions, which will represent a dramatic source of new findings.

• Size and burden of disorders of the brain in Europe - an update

  Professor Hans-Ulrich Wittchen, MD, PhD, Germany

  Monday, 5 September 2011, from 11.15-12.00, Passy, Palais des Congrčs de Paris

  Professor Wittchen from the Technische Universitaet Dresden, and Vice-president of ECNP will present on behalf of the joint ECNP-EBC Task Force the latest 2011 update on prevalence, burden and cost of mental disorders in Europe. This represents an
  extended and updated version of our previous size and burden document (ref. European Neuropsychopharmacology 15 (2005) Special issue.)

Each press conference will be moderated by an expert of ECNP.
