International conference tackles effects of nuclear radiation on humans, plants and animals

McMaster University will host a major conference on the environmental effects of radiation as Japan continues to struggle in the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear crisis.

More than 250 delegates from around the world are expected to participate in the International Conference on Radioecology and Environmental Radioactivity, which will examine key issues such as nuclear safety, accidents, dealing with emergencies such as Chernobyl and the recent Fukushima disaster.

"The Japanese crisis has led to a resurgence of concerns about nuclear safety," says Carmel Mothersill, conference chair and a professor in the Department of Medical Physics & Applied Radiation Sciences at McMaster University. "The events make the field of radioecology and environmental radioactivity of paramount importance. They also highlight the need to build capacity in these areas which have been neglected in non European countries."

The conference takes place from June 19 to 24 at the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel.
