UTHealth's Ching-On Wong wins postdoc presentation contest

Ching-On Wong, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), won the UTHealth Postdoctoral Presentation Competition.

Wong's presentation was titled "Flying into Brain Diseases" and addressed the use of a fruit fly model to study a childhood brain disease.

Twenty-five postdoctoral fellows entered the competition designed to help researchers translate complex science into plain English. The six finalists delivered 10-minute presentations before a panel of judges on April 12 at the UTHealth Medical School.

Postdoctoral Presentation Competition organizer Alexander Hutchison, Ph.D., said the ability to simplify intricate material can give postdoctoral fellows a leg up in the competition for research grants. Postdoctoral fellows are individuals with doctoral degrees engaged in mentored research and/or scholarly preparation.

Wong did his graduate work at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Last year, he joined the laboratory of Kartik Venkatachalam, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology at the UTHealth Medical School.

Wong received a cash prize of $800.
