Keeping our information safe: Unbreakable quantum code sent between University of Calgary and SAIT

Today’s communication security is threatened by faster computers and better ways to crack codes. With the advent of the quantum computer, current encryption methods will become obsolete.

Researchers at the University of Calgary and SAIT Polytechnic will demonstrate that they can send an unbreakable quantum key between the institutions. This is a significant milestone in quantum cryptography research in Canada. A demonstration and lab tour is part of a celebration of this event with remarks made by Honourable Greg Weadick, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology, Elizabeth Cannon, president of the University of Calgary, Irene Lewis, president and CEO of SAIT, Gary Albach, President and CEO of Alberta Innovates-Technology Futures and Chris Pogue, vice president, General Dynamics Canada.

Time: 9:45 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Location: University of Calgary, ICT Building, Room 516 (lab tour and photo opportunity immediately after remarks). Video b-roll of the demonstration will also be provided to media.
