UCLA News|Week: How HOV lanes on the freeway work

When high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes work right, they create the ability to carry more people on congested freeways. "However, hitting that sweet spot is hard to do," explains Brian Taylor, director of the UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies.

In this edition of UCLA News|Week, Taylor says that attracting drivers to use HOV lanes requires a tricky balance. Lanes need to carry a high volume of traffic to be perform efficiently, but cars need to flow freely or drivers will lose the incentive to carpool. "You're trading off the inconvenience and flexibility of having to to coordinate with someone else and travel together, for the time savings of being able to bypass the traffic. That's the logic of an HOV lane."
