July 29th, 2011

Kermit A. Crawford, PhD, a clinical associate professor of psychiatry and director of the Center for Multicultural Mental Health (CMMH) at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Award for Excellence in Diversity Training by the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers. The award, which will be presented to Crawford during the American Psychological Association's Convention in Washington, DC, in August, recognizes Crawford for his excellence and innovation in education and training.

Crawford is a designated forensic psychologist and researcher who has also done extensive work in multicultural behavioral health disaster response, trauma and grief, substance abuse and co-morbid disorders. In addition to being both an educator and a clinical psychologist, Crawford is a member of the Advisory Board for the American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship Program and the Clinical Treatment Guidelines Steering Committee. He is a member of the Behavioral Health Disaster Response Cadre of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

"I will accept this award as a reflection of the support I have received from my faculty and staff, from the interns and from the Division of Psychiatry," said Crawford, who is also a psychologist at Boston Medical Center. "This honor will be shared in full recognition that without 'we' there is no 'me'."

Crawford oversees a staff of eleven at BUSM's Center for Multicultural Mental Health, which provides services primarily to a racially and ethnically diverse, urban, poor population that is at an increased risk for mental health problems, substance use disorders and poorer health outcomes. Additionally, the CMMH provides services, such as assessment/diagnosis, counseling, referral, training, and consultation to more than 15 community-based organizations throughout the city of Boston.
