Stem cells, which can be derived from embryonic cells, but also from adult human cells, have the remarkable potential to either perpetuate themselves through self-renewal or differentiate towards specialized cell lineages. This dual capacity holds enormous potential for medical research and therapy. "Therefore, nowadays we think of stem cells as the magic cure for the future, though we are just beginning to attain a comprehensive understanding of stem cell biology," the organizers of the conference stated.

In the continuing discourse, however, stem cell research remains a controversial issue.

The stem cell conference will focus on how lessons from developmental biology may guide toward biomedical applications of stem cells. In line with this, recent advances in the basic understanding of stem cell biology in different model systems and their relevance to mammalian systems and human diseases will be presented.
