Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden professor to receive prestigious prize in mathematics
The W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize in Mathematics will be awarded to Anders Lindquist at the annual meeting of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) in Denver, Colorado, July 6-10. Lindquist is being recognized for his fundamental contributions to the theory of stochastic systems, signals, and control. He is head of the Division of Optimization and Systems Theory and Director of the Strategic Center for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CIAM) both at the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.
Lindquist will deliver the Reid Prize Lecture, "The Moment Problem for Positive Rational Measures: Convexity in the Spirit of Krein," on Wednesday, July 8. He will receive an engraved medal and a $10,000 cash prize.
The lecture will cover the moment problem as formulated by Krein and Nudel'man, which is a beautiful generalization of several important classical moment problems. The importance of rational functions in systems and control and other engineering applications imposes certain complexity constraints. In this talk, Lindquist will present a new formulation of the moment problem which respects these constraints. In particular, he will present a solution in terms of a convex optimization problem that generalizes the maximum entropy approach used in several classical special cases.
Professor Lindquist received his PhD degree from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, where, in 1972 he was appointed a Docent of Optimization and Systems Theory. Presently, Lindquist is the Head of the Mathematics Department at that institution and director of its Strategic Research Center for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CIAM). He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an Honorary Member of the Hungarian Operations Research Society, as well as a member of SIAM.
