Bone experts to present strategies for osteoporosis prevention and care in Dubai
Osteoporosis and related fractures are an increasingly important health issue in the Middle-East. Whereas between 8-20% of the population in the region is currently over 50 years of age, in several countries this proportion is expected to rise to 25% in 2020 and to 40% in 2050. Unless prevention strategies are put in place, the Middle-East will face a dramatic increase in disability caused by fractures, particularly of the hip and spine.
A first line effort to fight the problem of osteoporosis and related fractures is the upcoming 1st Middle-East & Africa Osteoporosis Meeting, to be held from October 19-22, 2011 in Dubai. Organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) with experts from 16 national societies in the region, the meeting is expected to be the largest ever held in the Middle-East. IOF is greatly honoured to announce the official patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Industry, U.A.E., and President of the Dubai Department of Health and Medical Services.
This important event will present the latest clinical advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis, as well as new regional research and epidemiological findings. Visit www.iofbonehealth.org/dubai-2011/programme.html to view the complete programme.
In conjunction with the meeting, IOF will launch an audit report outlining the burden and status of osteoporosis in the Middle-East and Africa. Compiling the latest epidemiological research from 17 countries, the landmark report will be the first of its kind for the region.
