Solar car drivers up against 45-degree heat, no power steering and the occasional kangaroo

The University of Calgary Solar Team is about to put the Schulich Axiom to the ultimate test: racing 3,000 km through the Australian Outback, from Darwin in the north to Adelaide in the south. Nearly forty teams from around the world - including three others from Canada - will compete in the World Solar Challenge beginning Oct. 16.

Drivers have spent months in training, mastering the art of highway driving and practicing hot yoga to get their bodies accustomed to intense heat for extended periods of time. The driver's compartment of the Axiom is expected to reach extreme temperatures under the scorching Australian sun.

At the final meeting before leaving for Australia, the team will discuss last-minute preparations and hold a video conference with two members who have already arrived in Australia with the vehicle.

Media are invited to the team's shop for interviews and to see two of the team's previous solar cars.
