UC Riverside Delivers the Course Catalog on Your Tablet

Back in the day it cost $5 to buy a print version of UC Riverside's general catalog at the campus bookstore. Now, for just a penny less, you can download it on your Kindle.

The UC Riverside General Catalog for 2011-2012 is now available in the Kindle format through Amazon.com. The Apple iBook version of the catalog will be available shortly.

“At UCR, we always want to be on the forefront of communications technology when it comes to reaching our students. In today’s world, the first place they turn for information is to their mobile devices,” said James Sandoval, UC Riverside’s Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. “Last year, we introduced MyUCR Mobile, a smart phone version of our admissions process. This year, we’re introducing the ebook catalog, and we’ve also launched an online 360-degree virtual campus tour, which also has a mobile application.”

The introduction of the annual course catalog in the Kindle format seems to be a first in the ebook industry. “As far as we can tell, we are the first university to offer our course catalog as an ebook,"said UC Riverside Registrar, Bracken Dailey. "At the very least, we are the first University of California campus to do so.”

Because Kindle is accessible across a variety of formats, the UC Riverside catalog is now available on Android, Apple, BlackBerry, iPhone, iPad, and Windows. The ebook provides UCR students, faculty, and staff members with better mobility, accessibility, and a high-powered search function.

Both versions are priced at $4.99. That is one cent less than the traditional price of the printed catalog. Ebook catalogs can be ordered through the UCR catalog website at catalog.ucr.edu
