David Yap receives Amethyst Award

Dr. David Yap has been presented with the prestigious Amethyst Award from the Ontario Public Service (OPS). He received the award on 18 June 2009 from the Premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty, in recognition of his work at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, combating air pollution in Canada and the United States.

Dr. Yap is associate editor of Springer's new journal Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health and has co-authored articles in the journals Water, Air, & Soil Pollution and Boundary-Layer Meteorology, both published by Springer.

After completing a master's degree in meteorology at McGill University in 1969, Dr. Yap received his Ph.D. in urban climatology from the University of British Columbia in 1973.

In his current role as Senior Scientific Advisor, Air Quality and Meteorology, at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, his work has led to the development of Ontario's Air Quality Index and Smog Alert Programs. He is also renowned for interpreting complex air pollution science for various stakeholders and the media. In addition, Dr. Yap's scientific leadership has contributed directly to air emissions reduction plans and a decrease in acid rain in Canada and the United States.
