Research holds promise for anti-inflammatory drugs
Researchers with Montana State University have identified a new class of kinase inhibitors that have potential for the development of drugs to treat a variety of diseases. The findings have a U.S. patent pending and research is ongoing.
The work is significant because kinases are enzymes that modify the actions of specific proteins and some diseases can be traced to kinases disrupting normal protein activity. Several drugs on the market target kinases to inhibit their function - Lapatinib for breast cancer and Sorafenib for kidney disease.
The kinase inhibitors identified by the researchers target the c-Jun N-Terminal kinases (JNK's). JNK's are involved in the development of chronic inflammatory diseases. The implication is strong for a potential small molecule, or non-biological, anti-inflammatory drug.
These technologies are the latest available for licensing at MSU. Currently, MSU has 197 licenses from technologies developed by faculty and researchers, with 93 of those licenses in the hands of Montana companies.
