Nobel Prize Laureate hosts webcast to explore impact of translational vs. basic research trends
2008 Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry, Dr. Martin Chalfie, will host a live webcast to address the impact of translational versus basic research trends and the powerful implications for the future of scientific research. The webcast is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, February 29th, 2012 at 9:00 am Pacific Time/12:00 pm Eastern Time. Dr. Chalfie, who is currently the Chair of Columbia University's Department of Biological Sciences, has entitled his presentation, "Fueling Innovation: How Research is Really Done." In recent years government officials, university administrators, and clinical researchers have called for a greater emphasis on "translational research" -- research that translates findings in the laboratory into new treatments for medical conditions. Dr. Chalfie will suggest that while the application of biological and biochemical research to human disease (as well as the application of discoveries in the other sciences to improvements in agriculture and industry) is extremely important, it should not detract from the critical focus that must be maintained on advancements in basic research. Dr. Chalfie will give examples from his own research developing Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) as a biological marker, as well as from other landmark applications derived from basic research. The webcast will end with a live Q&A with Dr. Chalfie.
