John DeLuca, PhD, and Allan Lokos converse about memory following a screening of Caris' Peace, an award-winning film about an actress who develops severe cognitive disability after brain surgery.

The award-winning documentary of the life of actress Caris Corfman is part of the Rubin Museum's BRAINWAVE 2012 neuro cinema series. The series, in its fifth year, invites neuroscientists to share their perspectives on the working of the minds. Memory is the theme for the 2012 series.
John DeLuca, PhD, Vice President for Research and Training at Kessler Foundation, oversees Kessler Foundation's renowned rehabilitation research in spinal cord injury, brain injury, multiple sclerosis and stroke. Dr. DeLuca specializes in disorders of memory and information processing in traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis and has authored more than 200 articles, books, and chapters in these areas. His collaborative work in cognitive rehabilitation extends to Italy and China. He is the editor of four recent books, including the Encyclopedia of Clinical Neuropsychology. He often presents at national and international conferences and contributes to continuing education for professionals and consumers.
Allan Lokos is founder and guiding teacher of The Community Meditation Center in New York City. He is the author of Patience: The Art of Peaceful Living and Pocket Peace: Effective Practices for Enlightened Living. He has practiced meditation since the mid-nineties and studied with such renowned teachers as Sharon Salzberg, Thich Nhat Hanh, Joseph Goldstein, Andrew Olendzki, and Stephen Batchelor. He has also attended a number of weeklong teachings with His Holiness, The Dalai Lama.
Caris Corfman, a promising graduate of the Yale School of Drama, lost her short-term memory secondary to surgery for a brain tumor. Despite losing the ability to learn, recall, and recite lines, Corfman was determined to return to the theater she loved. Gaylen Ross with collaborator Rebecca Nelson created this wrenching documentary chronicling the impact of the sudden and complete loss of short-term memory on the life of this talented professional. The film features Lewis Black, Tony Shaloub, Kate Burton & Nancy Giles.
