IU Health first in state to successfully deploy special aneurysm-repairing stent graft

Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital is the first hospital in the state and second in the nation to successfully implant a special stent graft aimed at helping those who previously required invasive surgery to remove an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Currently, about 40 percent of all patients with such a condition required invasive surgery because, due to the position and shape of the aneurysm, current stent deployment would have blocked off blood flow to the kidneys. The Ventana Fenestrated Stent Graft System could offer a less invasive approach, helping at least half that group through its unique three-part design that doesn't cut off blood flow to the kidneys or require open repair, which has a 10 percent mortality rate. IU Health surgeons are hopeful this new procedure – which is still undergoing clinical trials – will have a 1 percent or less mortality rate.

“While it’s still too early to draw any conclusions, this is a positive first step toward treating those with abdominal aortic aneurysms,” said Dr. Alan Sawchuk, a vascular surgeon with IU Health Cardiovascular and professor with the local trial’s host, the Indiana University School of Medicine. “This stent graft, if one day approved, has the ability to not only transform how we treat patients but has the potential to save numerous lives each year.”

IU Health successfully completed the state’s first two procedures late last month and both patients are doing well. The procedure is currently undergoing a phase I clinical trial at IU Health Methodist Hospital and will soon expand to a handful of other U.S. hospitals. An additional 15 hospitals will take part in a phase II trial.

Sawchuk noted final government approval could come in 1-2 years – if the trials are successful – and that deployments in other countries have been positive.
