Engineers develop method to spot breast cancer months before tumours appear
Engineers at the University of Calgary's Schulich School of Engineering have discovered a way to detect breast cancer several months before tumours form.
Advanced computer technology was key in developing a software system to analyze images from mammograms and flag subtle, early signs of breast cancer that are often missed during routine screening.
The system focuses on detecting architectural distortion, which refers to specific patterns in breast tissue that can be precursors to cancer. They may be present more than a year before the appearance of obvious signs such as lumps.
The research team has won a Publication Prize from Canada's Institute for Cancer Research for making a significant contribution to cancer research.
