Exploring the meaning of social justice
When individuals with similar goals get together 'things' can happen. That's exactly how The Collective for Social Change has been evolving on the Auraria Campus.
The group organized a three-day event "The Art of Social Justice" featuring speakers and lively discussions. The program began yesterday and continues through Thursday in various venues on the Auraria Campus.
This self-identified 'idealogically disparate' group of activists includes:
--Rachel Boice, CU Denver Humanities and Social Science graduate student
--Dustin Breitling, CU Denver Communications student
--Candace Johnson, Metropolitan State College Economics and Sociology major
--Stephen Polk, community organizer
--Dustin Lewis, Metropolitan State College history major
--Daniel Salcido, Metropolitan State College political Science and Chicana/o Studies major
--Anthony Cortez, CU Denver studying international relations and social justice
Their stated goal -- "We want a radical shift in how people experience 'social justice.' Social justice isn't a book, it isn't a non-profit, it isn't even a protest. Social justice is a cultural shift of awareness it includes all of thes things and more."
The overall nature of this three-day event embodies the group's philosophy that "everyone can 'do' social justic. It is a way of being."
Planned activities continue this evening with a film screening of "Searching for Angela Shelton," in the Tivoli Multi-Cultural Lounge at 6 p.m.
Thursday's schedule begins at 11:30 a.m. with three simultaneous events:
--"The Fight for Fair Food: Tomatoes, Farmworkers and Human Rights" with Robert McGoey and Patrick Kresnall -- Plaza Building 114
--"Thrive" film screening with Michael Anderson -- Tivoli Multi-Cultural Lounge
--"Power and Public Transportation; A political deconstruction of urban mass transit." with Adam Uddin -- Tivoli 440
Conference attendees can pick up a full schedule of all events for tomorrow in the Tivoli.
The final event tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. is a keynote by Cornel West in the Tivoli Turnhalle. West is the author of Race Matters, Democracy Matters and his new memoir Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud.
Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the CU Denver Food Pantry which serves students on campus, no questions asked.
