Presidential Recognition Awards presented during the 2012 AIUM Annual Convention

Alfred Z. Abuhamad, MD, president of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), presented the esteemed Presidential Recognition Awards to Harvey L. Nisenbaum, MD, and Richard Hoppmann, MD, at the 2012 AIUM Annual Convention in Phoenix, Arizona. This award honors exceptional service to the AIUM and to the ultrasound community. Its recipients are extremely active in contributing to the growth and development of medical ultrasound.

Harvey L. Nisenbaum, MD, immediate past president of the AIUM, received recognition for his key involvement in working with the American Urological Association to develop joint performance and training guidelines in urology. These developments serve as a road map for practices wishing to voluntarily seek accreditation through the AIUM. Dr Nisenbaum's collaborative efforts with multiple societies during the course of his leadership within the AIUM set the stage for additional cooperative efforts that will continue into the future.

Richard Hoppmann, MD, was honored for the efforts he has made to foster the integration of ultrasound into medical education through his role as dean of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and founder of the Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education (SUSME). It was Dr Hoppmann's inspiration to partner SUSME and AIUM to develop the 2013 Year of Ultrasound campaign, designed to highlight ultrasound in education. Dr Hoppmann presented the Plenary Session "Medical Education: Ultrasonography as a Basic Clinical Competency" in addition to moderating a 2-part "Teach-the-Teacher" course during the 2012 AIUM Annual Convention.

The AIUM congratulates these most deserving individuals for their extraordinary contributions toward advancing ultrasound in medicine.
