CLEO: 2012 -- premier international laser and electro-optics event -- in San Jose next week
WHEN/WHERE: May 6-11, 2012 (Exhibits open May 8-10) at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center
DETAILS: CLEO: 2012, the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, is the premier international forum for scientific and technical optics—from fundamental laser science to photonic applications and products. CLEO: 2012 builds on the long-established CLEO/QELS conference and its world-renowned peer-reviewed program. CLEO: 2012 offers high-quality content in five core event elements featuring breakthrough research and applied innovations in ultrafast lasers, energy-efficient optics, quantum electronics, biophotonics and more.
FEATURING:
- 300 participating companies in the laser and electro-optics industry (25 percent based outside the U.S.).
- Comprehensive technical program featuring hundreds of sessions covering the most important technical developments, including fundamental research in electro-optics, innovative developments in laser science, and commercial applications in photonics.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Business and Technical Programming:
CLEO: 2012 Press Luncheon – Biophotonics for Cancer Detection, Diagnosis and Treatment
A private press and analyst-only lunch panel at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9 will feature presentations from three of the field's leading researchers on the latest developments in image-guided spectroscopy of cancer, translating optical technology into clinical tools, coherence imaging for early cancer detection, and the molecular spectroscopy and imaging market.
Also on hand will be the 2012 CLEO/Laser Focus World Innovation Award winner, BioPhotonic Solutions, describing their winning device – the femtoAdaptiv™ -- a new ultrafast laser with potential applications in biomedical imaging, optical coherence tomography, and metrology in academic research and development laboratories.
Speakers:
- David Benaron, Stanford Biophotonics Group, Stanford School of Medicine, and Spectros Corporation, Molecular Spectroscopy and Imaging: A Multi-Billion Dollar Industry Reshaping Biotech and Medicine
- Brian Pogue, Dartmouth College, Image-Guided Spectroscopy of Cancer: Translating Optical Technology into Clinical Tools
- Adam Wax, Duke University, Early Detection of Pre-Cancerous Cells Using Optical Spectroscopy and Light Scattering
- Marcos Dantus, Michigan State University and BioPhotonic Solutions, Inc., moderator and Innovation Award winner
Post-Deadline Paper Session
Post-deadline papers give conference attendees the opportunity to hear new and significant research in rapidly advancing areas at the earliest possible opportunity. The post-deadline session, which saw a more than 20 percent increase in the number of submissions this year, highlights only those papers judged to be truly excellent and compelling in their timeliness.
CLEO: 2012 hosts two Plenary Sessions featuring keynote addresses from industry luminaries across the globe:
Tuesday, May 8, 8 a.m.:
- Robert W. Boyd, University of Ottawa and University of Rochester
"Nonlinear Optics: Past Successes and Future Challenges"
- Steven DenBaars, University of California, Santa Barbara
"Development of Nonpolar and Semipolar InGaN/GaN Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and Laser Diodes"
Wednesday, May 9, 8 a.m.:
- Mathias Fink, Ecole Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris (ESPCI)
"Time-Reversed Waves and Subwavelength Focusing"
- Yurii A. Vlasov, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center
"Silicon Integrated Nanophotonics: Road from Scientific Explorations to Practical Applications"
CLEO: Applications & Technology
The new CLEO: Applications & Technology program explores the intersection of academic research with product commercialization. Featured session talks include:
- Medical 'Lightsabers': Laser Scalpels Get Ultrafast, Ultra-Accurate, and Ultra-Compact Makeover
Research from the University of Texas at Austin.
- Conquering LED Efficiency Droop: Overcoming Mysterious Phenomenon Could Lead to Affordable LED Lighting Research from the Solid State Lighting and Energy Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
- Portable Gas Sensors Improve Atmospheric Pollution Measurements
Research from Princeton University, the University of Rostock in Germany and Sensor Electronic Technology Inc.
The "classic" CLEO program that for more than 35 years has covered applied research and innovations in lasers, optical materials, and photonic devices. Hot topics to be covered this year include laser processing of materials, terahertz technologies, high-field and ultrafast optics, and biophotonics. Featured session talks include:
- The Solar Cell that Also Shines: Luminescent 'LED-type' Design Breaks Efficiency Record, Illuminates 50-Year Mystery Research from Eli Yablonovitch of the University of California, Berkeley.
- Re-defining Time: Transmitting Extremely Precise Clock Signals Over Long Distances Could Help Pave the Way to a New Definition of the Second Research from Germany's Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and Federal Institute of Physical and Technical Affairs.
CLEO: QELS – Fundamental Science
The Quantum Electronics and Laser Science (QELS) program continues to be the premier venue for discussion of fundamental research in optical and laser physics-related areas. Topics will include optics, modern spectroscopy, quantum information science, molecular manipulation and control, nanophotonics, and metamaterials. A featured session talk includes:
- Attosecond Lighthouses May Help Illuminate the Tempestuous Sea of Electrons Research from the French Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique.
In addition to the 300 participating companies from across the globe, CLEO: Expo features show floor programming that highlights business trends and market applications.
- Technology Playground – New this year, Technology Playground features hands-on demonstrations from select CLEO: Expo exhibitors. Attendees will get to interact one-on-one with products and innovations from companies such as Edmund Optics, Coherent, Newport, Thorlabs, TOPTICA, and others.
- CLEO: Market Focus – Part of the CLEO: Applications & Technology program, Market Focus sessions cover business and commercialized applications in four topical areas: energy, biophotonics, defense and industrial.
