2012 American Society for Microbiology General Meeting

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) will hold its 112th General Meeting June 16-19, 2012 in San Francisco, California. The meeting will feature approximately 3,000 individual scientific presentations spanning the breadth of microbiology and has an expected attendance of 10,000.

Microbiologists study living organisms and infectious agents, and their work is critical to human and animal health, agriculture, the environment and biotechnology. Many accomplishments in the microbiological sciences have significantly affected our lives, such as the development of treatments for infectious diseases, the prevention of food spoilage, the use of microorganisms to clean up pollutants and basic knowledge of the nature of all living things.

Among the topics to be presented are:

The potential of synthetic biology for alternative energy and new drugs
Racial and ethnic differences in the human microbiome
Food safety and fresh produce
New technologies and microbiology in the year 2022
How microbes drive animal and human behaviors
Zoonotic diseases in companion and farm animals

One major trend at this year's meeting is how new technologies are not only changing how scientists do microbiology, but also how researchers view the role of microbiology and how microorganisms are shaping our world in ways we never imagined possible a few years ago.

The ASM General Meeting Press Center will be located in the Moscone Center and will be open starting at 12:00 noon on Saturday, June 16. Programs, abstracts, news releases and information about daily press media events will be available.
