Three NYU faculty receive awards from Pew Charitable Trusts

June 24th, 2014

Three NYU faculty have been selected to receive awards from the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Philadelphia-based non-profit announced today: Agnel Sfeir, an assistant professor at NYU Langone Medical Center; Ezequiel Arneodo, a postdoctoral research fellow at NYU Langone's Neuroscience Institute; and Yuriria Vázquez Zúñiga, a postdoctoral research fellow at NYU's Center for Neural Science.

Sfeir was selected as a member of the inaugural class of Pew-Stewart Scholars for Cancer Research. The Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust and the Pew Charitable Trusts have launched this national initiative to support promising early career scientists whose research may accelerate discovery and advance progress to a cure for cancer.

"Cancer continues to take a terrible toll on human health worldwide, and creative approaches are vital for the development of novel therapies," said Rebecca W. Rimel, Pew's president and CEO. "We are delighted to partner with the Stewart Trust to expand our commitment to science and eagerly anticipate the discoveries these talented researchers will make to address these challenges."

Arneodo and Vázquez Zúñiga were selected as Pew Latin American Fellows in the Biomedical Sciences. The program, established in 1991, allows early-career scientists to train in top U.S. laboratories and to develop skills and connections that will help them become scientific leaders in their home countries.

"The promising researchers joining our community of fellows today will no doubt make an indelible impact on the international research landscape in years to come," Rimel noted. "They are committed, creative scientists who will add to the world's store of biomedical knowledge."

Arneodo, a native of Argentina, will conduct postdoctoral research in olfaction in the laboratory of Dmitry Rinberg, associate professor of neuroscience and physiology, at NYU Langone's Neuroscience Institute. Vázquez Zúñiga, a native of Mexico, will conduct postdoctoral research in neuroscience in the laboratory of Bijan Pesaran at NYU.
