New project aims to plug innovation gaps in widening countries

March 3rd, 2025

The widerAdvanceFacility project will provide training and support for widening countries and outermost regions in their bid to make research results go further.

A European project—WiderAdvanceFacility—has been launched to provide structured support for both direct and indirect research results from widening countries and outermost regions (15 EU member states and 14 associated countries). It is funded under the EU's Horizon Europe programme and will run until December 2028.

The European Commission's Dissemination and Exploitation Strategy underlines the importance of maximising research results to drive innovation-led growth across Europe. However, structural challenges, insufficient research management capabilities, and gaps in intellectual property generation hinder many widening countries from fully capitalizing on their research potential.

To address these challenges and also to meet the 2030 UN agenda's principle "leaving-no-one-behind", the WiderAdvanceFacility project will develop a number of tools and online and in-person sessions to support the growth of the countries and the regions. In particular, the project plans to organise:

  • 50 specialised academies focusing on dissemination and exploitation goals.
  • Webinars and training modules designed to enhance research management skills.
  • Study visits to renowned research centres for hands-on learning.
  • Follow-up synergies and networking events to foster collaboration and visibility.

Building on expertise gained through hundreds of Horizon projects and the management of the Horizon Results Booster, ICONS will lead 15 training activities on dissemination and 10 on exploitation, drawing on professional and multicultural teams.

"What's new here is that project puts research and innovation organisations, not the project-level results, at the core of the action" says Chiara Palazzetti, ICONS Project Management Officer for widerAdvanceFacility. "The aim is to upskill them and to boost competitiveness in a more systemic and lasting way, and we're looking forward to delivering this alongside the other partners."

In overcoming key innovation barriers and promoting knowledge sharing, the widerAdvanceFacility project will deliver tailored support services, sustainable education initiatives and strategic policy contributions. This ensures a lasting impact, enhances visibility, and strengthens the recognition of widening countries and outermost regions within the European innovation landscape.
