The world's largest group of toxicologists meet at 50th Anniversary Annual Meeting
Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemical, physical or biological agents on people, animals, and the environment including the prevention of adverse effects.
Toxicologists are trained scientists who investigate, interpret, and communicate the nature of these effects as they relate to possible impacts on life and the environment that surrounds us.
From March 6-10, 2011, more than 7,000 toxicologists are expected to attend the Society of Toxicology (SOT) 50th Annual Meeting and ToxExpo™, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. As the news media, the public, and various stakeholder groups raise concerns about the safety of everyday items, all news media are encouraged to attend the meeting to gather the latest information.
The SOT is a scientific not-for-profit organization for professionals from around the world who are involved in the study of toxicology. With more than 6,000 members, SOT is creating a safer and healthier world by advancing the science of toxicology.
SOT is a forum for novel discoveries and approaches related to toxicology, fosters integration of sub-disciplines that support the evolution of toxicology, and, among other things, increases the impact of toxicology on human health and disease prevention.
This five-day meeting will feature several special sessions that highlight toxicology's progress over the past five decades. A sampling of the sessions follows:
- 50 Years of the Pill: Risk Reduction and Discovery of Benefits Beyond Contraception
- Developmental Origins of Adult Disease: The Effects of Low-dose Lead
- Bombs in Our Backyards? Historical Military Activities and Current Public Health Issues
- Food Safety of Genetically Modified Crops
- Toxicological Considerations in the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill
- Disease Prevention: The Next Fifty Years
- Autism: Genetic, Epigenetic and Environmental Factors Influencing Neural Networks
- Role of Biomarkers in Assessing Tobacco Harm Reduction: A Toxicological Perspective
Special plenary speakers invited to speak during the Annual Meeting include: Dr. Francis S. Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Margaret Hamberg, Commissioner, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Lisa Jackson, Administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Dr. Stephen Jackson, of the Gordon Institute. Presenters and speakers are respected professionals in the fields of human medicine, biotechnology, carcinogenesis, drug discovery, epidemiology, public health, food safety, genetic toxicology, immunotoxicology, inhalation and respiratory toxicology, in vitro and alternative methods, nanotoxicology, neurotoxicology, occupational health, pathology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, reproductive and developmental toxicology, risk assessment and veterinary medicine.
