Book publication: How to develop a serious game

March 3rd, 2011

Many designers, policy makers, teachers and other practitioners are beginning to realise the usefulness of serious games. Casper Harteveld, a serious games researcher at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft, The Netherlands) has produced one of the first scientific books on serious games design.

Serious games are digital games that serve a range of purposes, from helping students to learn about history, or getting patients to take their medication on time, to offering staff recruitment and training support. Harteveld has a great deal of experience of developing serious games himself. Drawing on this practical experience and on a number of examples, he describes his design philosophy of 'Triadic Game Design', which gives serious game designers a frame of reference that allows them to find a balance between the three elements of Reality, Meaning, and Play.
